We will give our opinion as nutritionists and parents, as well as analyze the nutritional aspects of bot formulas.

Let’s get after it!

*Note: we have chosen Hipp German Pre and Semper Allomin 1 for this comparison since they are designed for babies 0-6 months. The comparison is also applicable to different formulas for both brands, since the ingredients do not change drastically.

Our Short Answer

Maria and I have a weakness for organic food.

We are aware that nutritionally speaking, the differences are minimal, but there are many other benefits of eating and drinking organic foods that only become apparent over time.

That’s why Hipp is the winning formula in this competition.

While it is true that Hipp and Semper are nutritionally similar, the fact that Hipp is made with organic ingredients and adds probiotics from real breast milk makes Hipp a cut above Semper.

Brand Reputation

In today’s market, brand reputation is key to making educated decisions about the products we bring into our homes.

As parents, ensuring your baby has a quality formula from a reputable brand is essential.

Here we examine two brands in the baby formula market: HiPP and Semper.

HiPP Organic: Established in 1899, globally recognized for organic, EU-certified formulas replicating breastfeeding benefits. Emphasizes animal welfare-friendly farming and excludes harmful substances.

Semper: Highly regarded in Scandinavia since 1939, known for high-quality formulas. Contains prebiotics, and MFGM for gut health and cognitive benefits. Includes DHA for eye and brain development. Gaining international recognition.

Hipp Reputation

HiPP Organic has earned itself a prominent place in the global market for its unwavering commitment to providing organic and nutritionally sound formula for babies since 1899.

Originating from Germany, this family-run business prides itself on manufacturing high-quality, EU-certified organic baby formulas based on breast milk’s composition.

By eliminating harmful substances like artificial sweeteners and GMOs and incorporating valuable nutrients such as probiotics and prebiotics, essential fatty acids, and essential minerals and vitamins into its formulas, HiPP replicates breastfeeding benefits as closely as possible.

Its animal welfare-friendly farming processes underline the brand’s integrity to its organic promise.

Semper Reputation

Semper is another baby formula food brand worthy of admiration.

A product of Sweden, Semper enjoys an exceptional reputation in Scandinavia for their devotion to producing high-quality infant formulas since 1939.

Semper’s products contain both prebiotics and probiotics which work together to promote a healthy gut microbiome in your little one. Their use of MFGM (milk fat globule membrane) in their formulas also stands out as this structure provides various cognitive benefits for babies.

Including DHA (Omega-3 fatty acid) plays a crucial role in supporting babies’ eye development while advancing brain growth during the initial years.

Semper’s commitment to infant health is evident in its product composition creating a trusted name amongst parents globally.

While Semper may not be as renowned internationally as HiPP due to its greater prevalence within Scandinavia, it remains an extremely reputable brand within its central markets while steadily gaining international recognition.

Nutritional Composition

HiPP: Protein from organic skim milk and whey, suitable for sensitive stomachs. Carbohydrates from organic lactose, no corn-based sweeteners. Balanced fats with organic palm oil and fish oil.

Semper: Similar protein and carbohydrate content derived from skimmed milk and whey proteins. Balanced fats with sunflower oil, palm, and coconut oils. No organic palm oil like HiPP.

Protein Content

HiPP contains 1.28 g of protein per 100 ml serving. The primary source of protein is organic skim milk and whey protein which is gentle on tiny tummies and may alleviate issues like colic, constipation, bloating, and gas.

Semper’s Allomin 1 has a slightly higher content, with 1.3 g of protein per 100 g serving derived primarily from skimmed milk and whey proteins as well as Hipp.

The only main difference in protein content is that Hipp uses organic skim milk, and Semper does not.

In today’s world, going for organic is always better in the long run.

Carbohydrate Content

With HiPP Combiotic, you’ll find 7 g of carbohydrates per 100 ml, primarily from lactose, making it suitable for babies with sensitive stomachs or allergies to corn-based sweeteners.

Semper supplies slightly more carbohydrates compared to HiPP with around 7.2 g per 100 g serving, mainly derived from milk sugar, offering ample energy supply for your little one.

Same as with protein content, the only difference in carb content is that Hipp uses organic lactose.

No maltodextrin, starch, or corn syrups, which is what we want in conventional formulas.

*Important fact: Other Hipp formulas make use of starch or maltodextrin to reduce the amount of lactose. This is for those babies who have issues when digesting lactose.

Fats and Oils

HiPP offers a fat amounting to around 3.6g per every 100 ml serving through sources such as palm oil, rapeseed oil, and sunflower oil. It also includes fish oil – a vital source of Omega-3 (DHA) fatty acids contributing towards eye & brain development in infants.

Semper also ensures balanced fat content through cream, sunflower oil, palm & coconut oils, and fish oils rich in Omega-3-DHA fatty acids but slightly lesser than HiPP at approximately 3.5g per every 100g serving.

Even though nutritionally speaking both formulas have equal profiles, the fact that Hipp uses organic palm oil  and Semper does not is a massive difference, not only environmentally speaking, but at a nutritional level.

Probiotics and Prebiotics

HiPP: “Combiotic” formula with probiotics (Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum) and prebiotics (galactooligosaccharides/GOS) for digestion and nurturing good intestinal bacteria.

emper: Contains galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) as a functional fiber for promoting healthy gut bacteria but does not include probiotics.

HiPP takes the lead in this arena with their special “Combiotic” feature that implies their formula not only contains Probiotics (Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum) but also delicate amounts of prebiotics (galactooligosaccharides / GOS), originally extracted from real breast milk.

This blend is designed to aid digestion in your baby’s early stages by nurturing good intestinal bacteria.

On the other hand, Semper Allomin  does contain Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) which acts as a functional fiber aiding in promoting healthy gut bacteria, but it does not have probiotics.
