Our Short Answer

In our comparison between Enfamil Gentlease (the non-Neuropro version) and Similac Pro-Total Comfort, we chose the latter, but with the Neuropro version, we changed our opinion.

We believe that Neuropro deserves the victory for the simple fact of adding MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane).

This complex structure positively affects brain development, metabolic response, and gut health. It has also demonstrated antiviral activity and a reduction in the incidence of diarrhea.

Here are the pros and cons of each.

Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease:

+++ Adds MFGM
+ No added sugars
– No prebiotics
– Uses Corn Syrup Solids
– Adds Palm Olein

Similac Pro-Total Comfort

+ Adds 2′-FL HMO, a prebiotic found in breast milk
+ Uses Corn Maltodextrin instead of Syrup Solids
— Adds extra sugars

Please note that this is our personal opinion. Similac Pro-Total Comfort is still a formula with excellent features.

Before deciding, we recommend looking at the alternatives (further down in the article).

Overview of the Two Formulas

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease eases fussiness and includes Omega 3 DHA and MFGM.

Similac Pro-Total Comfort is for babies with fussiness and gas, contains 2’FL HMO for the immune system, and does not include palm olein oil.

Both formulas include essential nutrients for brain and eye health.

Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease is a popular baby formula clinically proven to ease fussiness, gas, crying, and spit-up within 24 hours of use.

It features Omega 3 DHA in amounts recommended by global experts for brain-building nutrition.

It is available in powder and liquid forms with various size options.

Its complete nutrition makes it suitable for babies up to 12 months.

Along with easy-to-digest proteins, Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease includes vitamins and minerals that boost immune health as well as Milk Fat Globule Membrane.

Similac Pro-Total Comfort

Similac Pro-Total Comfort is an easy-to-digest formula for babies with fussiness, gas, and crying who struggle to tolerate other milk-based formulas.

This formula contains immune-nourishing prebiotic like 2′-FL HMO, which is found in breast milk and supports a baby’s developing immune system.

Unlike many other baby formulas on the market, Similac Pro-Total Comfort doesn’t contain palm olein oil, enabling excellent calcium absorption.

It also includes DHA and lutein—essential ingredients found in breast milk—that support brain and eye health.

Nutritional Composition

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease and Similac Pro-Total Comfort both use partially hydrolyzed proteins.

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease has a whey-to-casein ratio of 60:40, while Similac Pro-Total Comfort has a ratio of 48:52.

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease contains carbohydrates sourced from corn syrup solids, while Similac Pro-Total Comfort uses corn maltodextrin and sugar.

Both formulas include a blend of fats and oils, but Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease includes palm olein and MFGM, while Similac Pro-Total Comfort does not have palm olein but also does not add MFGM.

Protein Content

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease: The protein content in Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease per 100 calories is 2.3g. This formula uses partially hydrolyzed nonfat milk and whey protein concentrate solids as their primary source of protein. These proteins are easier on the infant’s tummy and thus help in reducing fussiness and gas.

Similac Pro-Total Comfort: The protein content in Similac Pro-Total Comfort per serving size of 5 fl oz is 2.32g, prepared as directed. Their primary source of protein is whey protein hydrolysate, intended for babies who have difficulty tolerating other milk-based formulas.

Both formulas use partially hydrolyzed protein, which means it is easier to digest since it is partially broken down.

This type of protein is perfect for babies who have problems digesting cow’s milk protein.

However, if your baby has CMPA, you should look for an extensively hydrolyzed formula.

Enfamil has a better whey-to-casein ratio of 60:40, while Similac has 48:52.

Carbohydrate Content

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease: This formula contains carbohydrates at 10.8g per 100 calories, sourced primarily from corn syrup solids which function as a sweetener and provide an easy-to-digest carb source for babies.

Similac Pro-Total Comfort: Similac Pro-Total Comfort provides 10.7g worth of carbohydrates per serving of 5 fl oz (prepared as directed), with the primary sources being corn maltodextrin (a digestible carbohydrate made from corn) and sugar.

Corn maltodextrin is a better choice than corn syrup solids because it has less sugar. So, you might think Pro-Comfort, which uses maltodextrin, is better.

But there’s a twist. Pro-Comfort adds extra sugar to the mix to make the formula taste better. That’s not the best thing to do, because baby formula should taste as plain as possible.

So, there’s no clear winner when we talk about the sugar part of these two formulas. Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease and Similac Pro-Comfort are pretty much tied.

Fats and Oils

Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease: The fat content in this formula is at 5.3g per 100 Calories, derived from a mix of vegetable oil (Palm Olein, Coconut, Soy, And High Oleic Sunflower Oils). Other added sources are Mortierella Alpina Oil, which is a source of Arachidonic Acid (ARA), and Schizochytrium Sp. Oil used as a source of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). It also adds MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane), which is highly beneficial.

Similac Pro-Total Comfort: This formula contains approximately 5.4g fat per serving size of 5 fl oz, (prepared as directed). The fats in this formula come from High Oleic Safflower Oil, Soy Oil, Coconut Oil. It also has the same sources of DHA and ARA as Neuropro Gentlease.

Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease has palm olein (a more processed version of palm oil). The only instance where we would not mind the addition of palm oil to infant formula is if it were of organic origin.

That said, Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease also adds MFGM, an ingredient found in breast milk that consists of a membrane surrounding fat molecules that is highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by infants’ microbiota.

Similac Pro-Comfort does not have palm olein but also does not add MFGM.

We believe Enfamil’s addition of MFGM counteracts its use of palm olein, so we consider it a winner in fat content.

Probiotics and Prebiotics

Similac Pro-Total Comfort contains the prebiotic 2′-FL HMO.

Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease does not include prebiotics or probiotics in its formula.

While both Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease and Similac Pro-Total Comfort are designed to be gentle on baby’s stomach, only Similac Pro-Total Comfort includes a prebiotic—2′-FL HMO—in its ingredient list. This prebiotic, also found in breast milk, helps support the baby’s developing immune system.

Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease, on the other hand, does not include any prebiotics or probiotics in its formula
